Three hundred years ago, the Sanderson sisters are hanged by the townspeople of Salem, accused of witchcraft. Before dying, Winifred casts a curse, proclaiming that they will return when a virgin lights the black flame candle in their old house. In the present day (1993), Max, a newcomer from Los Angeles, struggles to fit in at school, where he is bullied by two classmates. He also has a crush on his schoolmate, Allison. On Halloween night, Max’s parents force him to take his little sister, Dani, trick-or-treating while they attend a party. While out, Max and Dani meet up with Allison, and together they decide to explore the infamous Sanderson sisters' house. There, Max lights the cursed black candle, unwittingly resurrecting the witches, Winifred, Sarah, and Mary. Now, the witches are determined to use their magic spell book to steal the life essence of children, allowing them to stay young and live beyond a single night. Max, Allison, and Dani must work together to stop the witches and prevent their evil plan from succeeding.
